Like learning to ride a bicycle, effective reading instruction requires essential skills and a solid foundation to propel teachers and students along the literacy journey.
Students need teachers who know how to teach the foundational skills of reading. Designed to be the cornerstone of a multiyear, systemic literacy improvement initiative, educators in Newcastle, Wyoming are using LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) as their comprehensive professional development course for instructors of language and literacy. LANGUAGE! Live is designed for students like the sixth graders at Dr. Louis A. Cerulli School No. 34—those who had never experienced reading success—with the goal of improving their decoding, spelling, grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. Although most struggling students are eager to learn, they are often uncomfortable when asked to read aloud or sound out words in learning groups.
